World Tourism Day 2020, celebrated on September 27th, is themed the Year of Tourism and Rural Development. This year the UNWTO (The World Tourism Organization) and other tourism organisations around the world are coming together to shine a light on the economic impact that the tourism industry brings to rural areas while celebrating the natural and cultural heritage of these communities.

The team at Rome2Rio have joined in on the celebrations this year, by collecting images of some of our favourite rural travel experiences from around the world. From Yurt camping in Jeti Oguz, Kyrgyzstan, to hiking the mountains in Ella, Sri Lanka for views of Little Adams Peak, to the sprawling vineyards of the Yarra Valley, Australia and much more.

Explore some of our highlights on the map below:

At Rome2Rio, we pride ourselves on providing travellers with the best information on exploring the world sustainably, from nearby places to far-flung destinations. As we look toward rebuilding tourism, we recognise the importance this awareness will bring to help drive economic growth outside of big cities.

While we look back at our favourite travel memories with gratitude, we continue to dream up our next adventures and are here for you to plan your future travels when it’s safe to do so.
