A new look for Rome2Rio

Published October 25, 2013

This week we rolled out a new brand, logo and design for the Rome2Rio website. The new look is the culmination of several months of hard work that involved rebuilding the HTML and CSS structure of the site from scratch. We worked with the incredibly talented folks at August who designed the brand and new look.

New logo
The original Rome2Rio logo was certainly endearing and has served us well since we launched in 2011. The new logo is simpler, bolder, and the hot pink theme provides a nice visual differentiation from other travel sites.

Welcome screen
We’ve kept the welcome image, but we no longer darken it, so that it really stands out. The input and welcome messaging is even simpler now too. Scroll down and you’ll get an overview of what Rome2Rio does, and real-time statistics on our current coverage.

Search experience
We’ve changed a lot about how Rome2Rio’s search results are presented, whilst retaining the original layout and design elements that already worked well. Panels and sections of the page now transition smoothly. The layout is cleaner and easier to read. The colour scheme has been revamped and we’ve utilized Google Map’s restyling technology to give the map a distinctive look that fits with the overall design.

New search interface

Hotel search
Although not really part of the new design, in August we quietly began experimenting with more deeply integrating hotel properties into the Rome2Rio product. Click the Need a Hotel? button at the bottom of the search results to see hotels at your destination plotted on the map.

You’ll also find our About Us, Coverage and Partner pages have been redesigned as well.

We think Rome2Rio now has a far more professional and polished look, and the feedback so far has been largely positive. Judge for yourself – we hope you like it too. With time we will tweak the design based on user feedback and user testing. As always, email us at feedback(at)rome2rio.com with any suggestions.

  1. I’ve been a keen and appreciative user of Rome2rio for quite some time now, finding it very useful for identifying which airlines service which airports and on which routes. Sadly, my two comments are both negative:

I quite dislike the new look of the website; the hot pink colour scheme is, to my eye, garish. But then, I do strongly favour functionality over design!

Perhaps more importantly, I no longer seem able to simply input one airport (and no other destination) and have the map populated with all routes, carriers and destinations from said airport. Am I overlooking something obvious?

    Thanks for listening!

    1. Hi Roger,

Thanks for the feedback! We appreciate the hot pink colour is not for everyone, but we hope you still find the site useful nonetheless!

For technical reasons we decided to remove the airport routes feature, since it was used by very few of our users. However we will certainly consider adding this feature back in some form if there is enough demand.

      Cheers,
      Michael

  3. Hi Michael,

I’m not so sure about the color scheme; maybe I will get used to it with time.
To provide uniqueness to sites, may I suggest you let us choose the colors in the partner section? This way we can match the integration to our site colors a bit better.

I am with Roger on the airport routes. I find it to be a very useful tool and it will be sorely missed. Perhaps you could add an option in the partner section to enable/disable it.

For the hotels, I love the map and how you can select the price range buttons. May I suggest you allow more than one price button to be selected at a time?

    Regards,
    Mike

  4. I’m having problems with the new windows. When choosing my route (say airline vs ferry) it diminishes significantly to the Left. Are others having this problem? Is it my browser? I also agree with Mike & Roger. Missing the airport codes and especially the different airlines and NOT loving the new design…seems too whimsical!!

  5. Hi Michael,
I’m perfectly OK with new look. very cool. I love pink!
But as Roger mentioned, I miss routes feature! Please, please bring it back! please!
